SEO Audit Common Technical Terms and Status Codes
All HTTP response status codes are separated into five classes (or categories). The first digit of the status code defines the class of response. The last two digits do not have any class or categorization role. There are five values for the first digit:
- 1xx (Informational): The request was received, continuing process
- 2xx (Successful): The request was successfully received, understood, and accepted
- 3xx (Redirection): Further action needs to be taken in order to complete the request
- 4xx (Client Error): The request contains bad syntax or cannot be fulfilled
- 5xx (Server Error): The server failed to fulfill an apparently valid request
HTTP Status Code – An HTTP status code is the server’s response to a browser’s request for data. When you first visit a website, the browser sends a request to the site’s server. The server will then respond to the browser’s request with the appropriate three-digit code: the HTTP status code.
- Broken Links – Broken Links are links that send visitors to a webpage that no longer exists. Broken links are a problem for visitors, making them unable to access the desired webpage, resource or information.
- HTML code errors – HTTP response status codes will determine whether an HTTP request has been completed successfully. Response codes are grouped in five classes: Informational Responses, Successful Responses, Redirects, Client Errors, and Servers Errors.
- Page Size – It’s crucial to have an efficient site that loads with the least size and amount of resources. This results in a faster site that will put less load/strain on your servers, and in turn happy visitors.
- Page Titles – Your Page Title Tag (or HTML Title Element) is arguably one of the most important individual on-page SEO elements to address during a technical audit.
- Meta Descriptions – The meta description tag is the snippet used to summarize your page content. Search engines may use these snippets in search results letting your visitors know about the page before clicking.
- Meta Keywords – The Meta Keyword Tag is no longer used by Google and we can discuss why you may or may not want to use this field.
- Total Links – All links to this page including internal, external, followed, and nofollowed.
- External Links – These are hyperlinks that point at any domain other than the domain the link exists on. In other words, when another website links to yours, this is considered an external link to your site.
- Nofollow Links – “Nofollow” provides a way to tell search engines “Don’t follow links on this page” or “Don’t follow this specific link.”
- Cache date in Google, Yahoo! and Bing – Google, Bing, and Yahoo all keep copies of many of the pages they index, and they all also tell you the date that they indexed the cached pages.
- Popularity according to Google and Yahoo! – According to the latest netmarketshare report (January 2018) 74.52% of searches were powered by Google and only 7.98% by Bing.
